Australian growers today are under more pressure than ever to produce high yields of quality crops or risk their financial viability.

Although plant nutrition has always been at the core of achieving high yield and quality, it has traditionally been dominated by the major elements: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (N-P-K).
In fact there are more than a dozen other minor elements (variously called macronutrients, micronutrients, trace elements, trace minerals etc.) that are essential for plants, and the availability of these minor elements impacts upon crop yield and quality.

The minor elements are required, on a weight basis, in lower quantities than the major elements, but their availability is just as important in determining yield and quality. Only after sufficient fertilisation with both major and minor elements are yield and quality limited by non-nutritional factors. Furthermore, increasing plant growth with N-P-K fertilisation increases demand for the minor elements and abundant N-P-K is of no benefit if growth is limited by availability of other elements.

When it comes to the minor elements, many growers follow a "reactive" process: they notice that their plants are not thriving or see obvious signs such as leaf chlorosis or fruit blemishes, then send samples for leaf, sap and soil analysis, wait for the results, then apply some traditional form of fertiliser that may not be effective.

In the current competitive environment, this approach is obsolete and puts the viability of the grower at risk. Once a plant is showing signs of deficiency, then to some extent it is already too late, as some permanent damge has been done that cannot be fully reversed even if the deficiency is immediately corrected. Quality and/or yield is always adversely affected by this approach.

The first step in achieving maximal quality and yield is to adopt a proactive approach to crop nutrition: this means applying minor element fertilisers regularly, before deficiencies are observed.
The second step is to use a fertiliser that is compatible with this approach, as traditional fertilisers (oxides or sulphates for example) are either unable to correct acute shortages because of their low availability or are phytotoxic when applied regularly. Modern amino acid chelates were first developed in the United States by chemists seeking to improve nutrient delivery to plants. They found that by chelating (binding) amino acids such as glycine to a nutritional atom and applying the new molecule to foliage, nutrients were delivered extremely efficiently to where they were most required by plants and without phytotoxicity.

When minor elements are chelated by amino acids, they are bound tightly enough so that they survive intact as they move throughout the plant, but are easily broken down and utilized once taken into a cell.
In contrast to other minor element fertilisers, plants recognise the nitrogen component of the chelate as valuable and transports the whole molecule, including the minor element, to where it is needed by the plant via the phloem, making the element highly mobile within the plant.

The net result of the high mobility and bioavailability of amino acid chelates is that only small quantities of fertiliser need to be used to be effective. Because they are applied as foliar sprays, amino acid chelates do not create soil mineral or pH imbalances, and allow consistent, convenient doses of minor elements.

Making amino acid chelates is a difficult process and some products on the market claiming to be amino acid chelates are likely to be non chelated salts (ionic compounds) instead.
